Microneedling 1

The Go-To Treatment For Younger Looking Skin

At Coastal Dermatology & Medspa, we’re constantly looking for new ways to help our clients refresh their appearance. One of the latest treatments that we offer is microneedling with the Rejuvapen, a minimally-invasive procedure that utilizes industry-leading technology to naturally stimulate collagen production and restore a plump, youthful complexion. This innovative technique can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments to provide comprehensive rejuvenation of the face, neck and body, addressing a wide range of skin concerns from the inside out.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that uses small, fine needles to reverse the appearance of common concerns such as sun damage, acne scars and the effects of aging. By gently puncturing the skin to activate the body’s natural healing response, this treatment stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, important proteins that give our skin a smooth, supple appearance. These components begin to decline as we age, causing fine lines, wrinkles and sagging to occur, but microneedling can give your skin the boost it needs and restore a healthy, youthful complexion in just a few short treatments.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling rejuvenates your appearance by creating dozens of controlled punctures or micro-injuries to the skin’s surface. The body responds by increasing blood flow and creating new collagen-rich tissues to heal these areas, replacing worn and damaged skin cells in the process. As a result, your skin becomes smoother and firmer, diminishing the appearance of everyday wear and tear that can make you look prematurely aged. Microneedling is a diverse treatment able to treat a wide variety of skin concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Uneven tone and texture

  • Loose or sagging skin

  • Acne scars

  • Sun damage

  • Stretch marks

  • Enlarged pores

Although most commonly used on the face, microneedling can also be used to treat other areas of the body as well, such as the neck, chest and abdomen.

Am I A Good Candidate For Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally-invasive treatment that addresses numerous skin conditions without the use of lasers or harsh chemicals, making it a safe and effective treatment for all skin types and tones. While it is often recommended for patients who have allergies or are at risk of developing hyperpigmentation after laser resurfacing, those with certain conditions may not be good candidates for microneedling, including the following:

  • Issues with wound healing or blood clotting.

  • Immunodeficiency problems

  • Active acne, psoriasis and other chronic skin conditions

  • Skin lesions and keloids

  • Fungal or bacterial infections

If microneedling is right for you, the skincare experts at Coastal Dermatology & Medspa can develop a customized treatment plan based on an assessment of your skin and desired outcome. To further enhance your results, microneedling can also be combined with other treatments such as chemical peels or microdermabrasion and may be used with PRP and growth factors, greatly increasing cellular regeneration and the natural healing process.

Microneedling At Coastal Dermatology & Medspa

When you arrive for your appointment, your skin will first be cleansed to remove any makeup or debris, followed by a topical anesthetic to alleviate any potential discomfort. Once your skin is ready, your practitioner will move the microneedling device across targeted areas, adjusting the needle length and depth as tiny micro-punctures are made to produce a desired outcome. At Coastal Dermatology & Medspa, we use the Rejuvapen, a state-of-the-art microneedling device that gives your provider more control than ever, allowing for a highly personalized experience that addresses your skin concerns in even the most delicate areas. Compared to other devices, the Rejuvapen also increases the absorption of active ingredients applied to your skin, allowing you to maximize the effectiveness of growth factors, serums and other topical products.

Microneedling procedures typically last for 30 to 40 minutes, but this may vary depending on the size and scope of your treatment area. You may feel the vibrations of the pen or a sandpaper-like sensation during your treatment, but the procedure is generally well-tolerated as the topical numbing cream ensures little to no discomfort.

What To Expect After Your Microneedling Treatment

After your appointment, you will be free to leave the office and resume all normal activities with no downtime or recovery, although your skin may be red and sensitive for the next 48 hours. This is a normal part of the healing process and should quickly subside, but you may be advised to avoid direct sunlight and skincare products that can cause dryness or irritation. Certain medications like NSAIDs should also be avoided in the weeks following your appointment, as inflammation is an important part of the healing process and critical for the rejuvenating effects to occur. Your provider will send you home with detailed aftercare instruction and advise you on how to care for your skin after microneedling to help you preserve your results and achieve your desired outcome.

Your Microneedling Results

Although you may notice an improvement in the tone and texture of your skin immediately after your treatment, more dramatic results will develop as the body’s natural healing response increases collagen production. Your complexion will continue to improve over the next few weeks, leaving your skin feeling soft, firm and supple. To achieve an optimal outcome and effectively reduce the appearance of acne scars, sun damage and other blemishes, most patients receive a series of two to three treatments spaced at least four weeks apart. Once you’ve reached your desired results, microneedling can be repeated as often necessary to maintain smooth, younger-looking skin. The skincare experts at Coastal Dermatology & Medspa will advise you on the number of treatments you need to achieve your goals, working closely with you to develop a customized treatment plan that keeps your skin looking great year-round.
