Are You at Risk for Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer can affect anyone, regardless of skin tone or background—but some people have a higher chance of dealing with it.

  • Have lighter skin that burns easily
  • Have a large number of moles or unusual-looking ones
  • Spend a lot of time in sunny areas (like Florida)
  • Have close relatives who’ve had skin cancer
  • Have been exposed to radiation in the past
  • Come into contact with harmful substances like arsenic
  • Have a weakened immune system due to illness or medication

The ABCDE’s of Identifying Melanoma

The ABCDE guide is an easy way to identify moles that might, in fact, be melanoma—the most dangerous form of skin cancer:

A

Asymmetry

Healthy moles tend to be symmetrical. If one half doesn’t match the other in shape, it could be a warning sign of something more serious.

B

Border

Watch for edges that appear jagged, uneven, or fuzzy. Moles with clean, smooth outlines are usually benign.

C

Color

Shifts in color—or moles that contain multiple shades like black, brown, or pink—might point to melanoma or another skin concern.

D

Diameter

Keep an eye on any mole that’s growing or measures more than six millimeters wide (roughly the size of a pencil eraser).

E

Evolving

Changes over time matter. A mole that starts to itch, scab, bleed, or simply looks different than it used to should be checked by a professional.

Jacksonville’s Top Questions About Skin Cancer

Skin cancer starts when cells in the outer layer of your skin begin growing out of control. While it can develop just about anywhere, it tends to show up most often on spots that soak up a lot of sun—like your face, arms, and hands.

At Coastal Dermatology & Medspa, Dr. Goyal and our team diagnose and treat all the major forms of skin cancer, including basal, squamous, melanoma, and precancerous lesions. No matter the type, catching it early makes all the difference—and that’s where we come in.

Dr. Goyal and our team will take a close look at your medical history, ask about any symptoms you’re noticing, and carefully examine your skin. If he spots any suspicious moles or growths, he’ll recommend a skin biopsy. This involves removing a small sample of tissue, which is then sent to a lab for analysis. The lab will determine if the lesion is cancerous or concerning and identify the specific type of skin cancer, helping guide the next steps in your care.

The treatment for skin cancer depends on factors like the type, location, and how far it’s progressed. Dr. Goyal and our team typically start with the least invasive approach possible. Depending on your diagnosis, treatment options may include:

  • Excisional surgery to remove the cancerous lesion
  • Curettage and electrodesiccation
  • Mohs surgery, to precisely treat basal or squamous cell carcinoma in specific locations
  • Radiation therapy if surgery is not a good option

For more advanced skin cancers you may need to be referred out.
