Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a method of getting rid of unwanted hair permanently using the power of laser energy. Dr. Goyal uses a sophisticated laser to focus a highly concentrated beam of light on the hair follicle. The pigment cells within the hair follicle absorb the light, destroying the hair.

Why would I choose laser hair removal?

Traditional forms of hair removal, such as shaving, tweezing, waxing, and depilatory creams, pose several inconveniences. None of these methods permanently remove hair, meaning you must repeat the treatment regularly.

In addition, using wax, tweezers, or an epilator to pull hair out at the root can be painful. Shaving can cause razor burn, and depilatory creams can cause a skin reaction.

By contrast, laser hair removal with Icon is a safe, painless, and permanent solution to unwanted hair when carried out by your skilled practitioner at Coastal Dermatology & Medspa.

What happens during a laser hair removal treatment?

First, your practitioner will instruct you to trim the hairs in the target area to a few millimeters above the surface of your skin. This is the ideal length to ensure full penetration of the laser beam.

During your appointment, Dr. Goyal then adjusts the laser platform to optimize the beam for the color and thickness of your hair, your skin tone, and the location of the treatment site. Applying a

cooling gel or device helps protect your skin and allows the laser beam to penetrate to the right depth.

Dr. Goyal directs the machine to apply pulses of laser light to the treatment area. He waits to check for reactions, adjusting the controls to ensure they’re optimal before continuing your treatment. Large areas, such as your legs, take about an hour, and smaller areas, such as your upper lip, take just a few minutes.

After your treatment session, your practitioner applies topical cooling products to reduce any inflammation. You should expect the treatment site to feel like a modest sunburn for the first few days after laser hair removal.

After between three and seven laser hair removal sessions, most patients find they achieve permanent hair loss. For smooth, hair-free skin forever, call Coastal Dermatology & Medspa today or book an appointment online.
