Botox and Fillers Q & A

What are Botox and fillers?

Botox and fillers are aesthetic injectables that correct mild to moderate age-related skin problems. Though often mentioned side-by-side, they aren’t the same thing.

Botox

Botox is a cosmetic neuromodulator. When injected into strategic areas of your skin, it blocks nerve signals from interacting with the muscles in your face. This allows your muscles to relax, reducing the appearance of crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead wrinkles.

Dermal fillers

Fillers are cosmetic injectables, like Botox, but they help “plump up” sagging skin. You stop producing as much collagen and elastin as you age. These proteins keep your skin firm and supple, but in lower amounts, your skin begins to sag. Fillers stop this from happening by restoring fat and increasing facial fullness.

What types of skin problems can Botox and fillers treat?

At Coastal Dermatology & Medspa, Dr. Goyal uses Botox and fillers to treat various skin problems, including:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Frown lines
  • Sagging jowls
  • Under eye bags
  • Marionette lines
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Wrinkles on the neck and upper chest

Sometimes, Dr. Goyal uses dermal fillers to fill loose skin on the hands and/or minimize the appearance of hand veins.

Are there different types of fillers?

At Coastal Dermatology & Medspa, Dr. Goyal offers several types of cosmetic fillers, including:

Dysport®

Dysport is a neuromodulator like Botox. It’s used to improve the appearance of glabellar lines –– the frown lines that form between your eyebrows. Dysport is unique because it’s very effective at treating moderate to severe wrinkles.

Juvederm®

Juvederm is a dermal filler that contains hyaluronic acid (HA). HA occurs naturally in the human body –– it helps plump up your skin and improves skin elasticity. A series of Juvederm injections can restore your facial contours and minimize signs of aging.

Juvederm® Voluma® XC

Juvederm Voluma XC is a special formulation of Juvederm specifically designed to help round out the cheeks. It temporarily adds volume to your cheek area, resulting in a more youthful and contoured appearance.

Are Botox and fillers safe?

Botox and fillers are safe and usually well-tolerated, but like any aesthetic treatment, they can present risks. After your injections, it’s normal to experience mild symptoms, including:

  • Redness or a rash
  • Mild swelling or bruising
  • Tenderness
  • Itching
  • Pain

These symptoms should improve within 24-48 hours, but if they continue or worsen, contact Dr. Goyal immediately.
